If you are unsure about light metering, leave the camera on matrix metering as this will work well in the majority of shooting situations.

In general, matrix metering can be used in most lighting conditions. The top image on the facing page looks as though it could cause problems for the matrix metering method, since the building is a lot lighter than the dark background. However, since there are reasonably equal areas of both light and dark in the image the matrix method can assimilate this and adjust the exposure accordingly. If either of the light or dark areas were significantly larger than the other then this could cause problems for the matrix method.

In the bottom image on the facing page the light and shade could potentially cause problems for the matrix method. However, since this is evenly distributed throughout the image the matrix method can easily find an equivalent image in its database and so expose the image correctly.
